Drung GFC annual variety show took place in Drung Community Centre last weekend. This thoroughly enjoyable event was well attended and great credit is due to the entire cast and their producers Martin O Rourke and Ben Brady.

Bunnoe Crackers Variety Show
Rehearsals are in full swing for all sections and show will be staged on Thursday March1st to Sunday March 4th.

Design an Irish language t-shirt for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2012, An Cabhán. Utilise a phrase/slogan in Irish from the list provided or indeed a phrase/slogan in Irish of your own choice. Gaeilge/Irish only to be used. Artistic design and phrase. T-shirt outline not necessary.

Beidh na hiontrálacha ar taispeáint i Leabharlann Cheannais Mhic Sheáin le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge, Márta 2012 agus in Ionad na Gaeilge le linn na Fleidhe. Bronnfar duaiseanna 1,2,3 do gach catagóir agus duais scoile don chomórtas go léir. Beidh ócáid bhronnta sa leabharlann le linn Sheachtain na Gaeilge, áit a mbronnfaidh aoíchainteoir na duaiseanna. Bronnfar meirge atá deartha go speisialta ar gach scoil a ghlacann páirt sa chomórtas.

The winning entries will be exhibited in the Johnston Central Library during Seachtain na Gaeilge, March 2012 and in the Ionad na Gaeilge during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2012. Prizes will be awarded 1,2,3 in the two categories and an overall school prize will be presented to the winning school. There will be an award’s night in the library with a guest speaker to present the prizes. A specially designed banner will be presented to every school that participates in the competition.

Died in England
The death has occurred in Swindon, England of Mrs Annie Johnson [nee McCaul] late of Lisarney. Annie was predeceased by her brothers Pakie McCaul, Lisarney, and Mick McCaul, Redhills. She is survived by her sister Mrs Mary McDonald, Dunmurry, sister in law Mrs Maggie McCaul, Lisarney, nephews and nieces to whom sympathy is extended.

Died in U.S.A.
The death occurred last week of Mr John Fay in Syracus U.S.A . Formerly from Cornacarrow, Drung, John was married to Maggie Smith, Ballyholly , Lisboduff and they resided in the U.S. for many years. John is survived by his wife Maggie, sons, daughters,and his sister Rose in Dublin to whom sympathy is extended.

Science Evening
On Thursday evening last the pupils of 4th, 5th and 6th classes of Lisboduff NS and their families attended an Abbott Science Evening in Bunnoe Community Centre. This was both an educational and enjoyable evening for everyone. Thanks to the staff of Abbott Ireland Cootehill for hosting this event, and also to the teaching staff from Lisboduff NS for their help and cooperation.

Review of Common Agricultural Policy
The European Union is reviewing its Common Agricultural Policy. Important decisions will soon be taken on the future direction of farming. The European Parliment will play a crucial role in deciding the final shape of any new iniatives and changes. To air your views , your concerns and your ideas a public consultation will take place at The Radisson Blu Hotel, Cavan on this Friday 25th November 9-30am to 1pm. Farewell Mass and Presentation
This event to mark the retirement of Lisboduff N.S. principal Mrs Kathleen Leddy took place on Friday night week. Proceedings began with Mass in Bunnoe Church which was concelebrated by Fr Gerard Cusack, Fr Gabriel Kelly and Fr Noel Boylan. There was great participation in the Mass from pupils past and present and teachers. After Mass there was a short recital from Bunnoe Brass Band , many members of whom were past pupils of Mrs Leddy. This was followed by a social in the Community Centre where a number of presentations were made to Mrs Leddy by the parents association, the board of management and the local football clubs. The Leddy family presented a beautiful framed picture to the Bunnoe Community and this will be on display in The Community Centre shortly. Music in the Centre was provided by local musicians, while the display of old photographs evoked many great memories and conversation on the night. The very large attendance on the night was a testament to the great esteem in which Mrs Leddy was held during her 31 year tenure in Lisboduff NS.
Great credit is due to the parents association for their meticulous organizing of this event.

St Aidans parents association AGM takes place in St Aidans Comprehensive School on Wednesday 9th November at 8pm. Wedding Bells
Congratulations to Noel Heuston, Drumbrollisk, Lisboduff and Cathy Caren Skerries Co Dublin, who were married in Galway on Friday last.

Mr Tony Fitzsimons
There was sorrow and regret in the local community at the news of the death of Mr Tony Fitzsimons , Dungonnon, Lisboduff which occurred on Wednesday last at Esker Lodge nursing home where he had spent the last number of months. Aged 74 years Tony was a quiet friendly man who enjoyed the company of his neighbours and many friends. A man of great faith Tony was a great supporter of all local organisations and events. He particularly enjoyed his involvement with the local Senior social club. Down the years he had a great interest in the local Drung GFC ,especially in the 1930s & 40s when a number of his brothers formed the backbone of the team, but he still followed their fortunes up until his health began to deteriorate in recent months. Tony is survived by his brothers Dessie and Joe and sister Philomena all in U.S.A, sister in law, nephews and nieces relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. His funeral Mass took place on Saturday in St Mary’s Church Bunnoe with burial afterwards in Drung cemetery.

125 year celebration
Bunnoe Brass Band celebrated 125 years in existence last Friday evening. Proceedings got underway with Mass for deceased members in St Mary’s Church where the band played the hymns and their members took an active part in the mass which was concelebrated by Fr Gerard Cusack and Fr Noel Boylan. Afterwards there was refreshments and a social in Bunnoe community centre, Tributes were paid to past band masters and members who kept the band alive through good and bad times over the 125 years. Presentations were made to Sr Declan Brady, Dungonnon and Jim Reilly, Kingscourt , and Sid Kearns, Drogheda for their invaluable contributions over the years.

The recent 100k charity cycle in aid of Barnardo,s and The Irish Kidney was a great success raising 4000 euros. Presentation of monies will take place in The Stray Sod on Saturday 24th September. St Finbarr’s ladies GFC are holding a fundraising pig racing evening in Bunnoe on Saturday 10th September. Pigs are on sale at 5 euros each from players and committee. This organisation provides activity for young girls in the parish right up to senior ladies and is worthy of your support.

Sympathy
Sympathy is extended to Fr Pat Bannon on the recent death of his brother in law, Mr James Gilleece, Springtown, Kinawley. James is survived by his wife Vera, sons, Aidan and Stephen and daughters Brenda and Caitriona to whom sympathy is extended.

Mr Hugh McCaul
There was widespread sorrow and regret at the death of Mr Hugh McCaul, Ardglushin, Lisboduff on Tuesday last. Aged 81 Hugh was a great neighbour and a hard working man and will be greatly missed by his neighbours and many friends. His main interests were farming and politics. Hugh served his community well and was an active member of the old hall committee and church committee in his younger days. Hugh is survived by his brother Benny in Dublin, sisters Mrs Agnes McEntee, Scotshouse and Mrs Nellie Jordan, Dublin, sisters in law, nephews and nieces, relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. His funeral took place in St Mary’s Church Bunnoe with burial in adjoining cemetery.

Introduction

The Irish language has a central part in the aims and objectives of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. In view of this, Seachtain
na Gaeilge is run in concurrence with Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. Seachtain na Gaeilge features a a wide range of Irish
language events for all age groups and abilities in the Irish language. The Seachtain na Gaeilge programme has been
facilitated by the generous sponsorship of Foras na Gaeilge. The Seachtain na Gaeilge programme of events has been
compiled by Coiste Gaeilge na Fleidhe, Glór Bhréifne, Cavan Central Library and Cavan Comhairle na nÓg.

Comórtas Ealaíne Bhunscoileanna Chontae an Chabháin/ Co. Cavan Primary Schools’ Art Competition

Tá na pictiúirí ealaíne a bhaineann le Comórtas Ealaíne Sheachtain na Gaeilge do pháistí bunscoile (Márta 2011), de chuid
Leabharlann an Chabháin, & Ghlór Bhréifne ar taispeáint in Ionad na Gaeilge. Is léiriú iad na pictiúirí ar oidhreacht, stair
agus áilleacht na gceantar éagsúil tríd an chontae.
The artistic pictures associated with the Seachtain na Gaeilge Art Competition for National School children (March 2011),
organised by Cavan County Library & Glór Bhréifne, are on display in Ionad na Gaeilge. The pictures depict the heritage,
history and beauty of the various areas and places throughout the county.

Comharthaíocht Ealaíonta Ghnó / Artistic Business Signage

Comharthaí ealaíonta Gaeilge deartha ag mic léinn sna meánscoileanna áitiúla, a léiríonn na gnónna agus seirbhísí atá ar
fáil i mBaile an Chabháin. Tá breis is 200 comhartha deartha don tionscnamh seo.
Artistic Gaelic language signs designed by local secondary school students, that depict the services and businesses
available in An Cabhán / Cavan Town. Over 200 signs were designed for this project.

Campa Samhraidh Ghlór Bhréifne 2011

Is coiste deonach, pobail, de chuid Ghlór na nGael agus Chomhaltas Uladh de Chonradh na Gaeilge é Glór Bhréifne atá
lonnaithe sa Chabhán. Reachtáil Glór Bhréifne Campa Samhraidh Gaeilge do pháistí bunscoile, 11ú -15ú Iúil, sa Backyard,
Eochoill, An Cabhán, áit a raibh 123 páiste ag freastal air. Bhí Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2011, An Cabhán mar théama,
agus tá ealaín agus taifeadadh ar Shiamsa an Champa á léiriú in Ionad na Gaeilge.
Glór Bhréifne is an Irish language voluntary community group based in An Cabhán and affiliated to Glór na nGael and
Comhaltas Uladh of Conradh na Gaeilge. Glór Bhréifne organised an Irish language summer camp for National School
children, 11th – 15th July, in the Backyard, Moynehall, An Cabhán. 123 children were in attendance and Fleadh Cheoil na
hÉireann was of one of the themes for the week, with art work and a recording of Siamsa an Champa on display in Ionad
na Gaeilge / Gaelic Language & Culture Centre.

A group of cyclists are taking part in a charity sponsored cycle in aid the Irish Kidney Association and Barnardos on Sunday 31st July. Mrs Annamay Fay
There was widespread sorrow and regret at the untimely death of Mrs Annamay Fay, Corravahan, Drung on Friday last after a long illness courageously borne. A quiet unassuming lady of great faith, Annamay was greatly respected by the many people who were privileged to know her. Much travelled in her younger days Annamay was very intellectual lady and she was a great supporter of all local activities in the community, A devoted wife, mother and grandmother her loss will be greatly felt by her family and many friends. Predeceased by her son Sean exactly eleven years ago, her husband Pat in February 2011 and her sister Bridie in November 2010, Annamay is survived by her sons, Padraig, Colm and Dermot, her daughter Helen, brother James Smith, Corravhan, sisters Mrs Kathleen Daly, Ardglushin, and Mrs Philomena Keenan, Lisnageer, grandchildren Eadaoin, Cillian and Aoife, daughters in law, brothers in law, sister in law, nieces and nephews. The huge turnout at her funeral in the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Monday was a testament to the esteem in which she was held. Her burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Principal Retires
Friday morning last marked the end of an era when principal Mrs Kathleen Leddy retired after 31 years dedicated service in Lisboduff N.S. Scrap Metal Collection
Drung G.F.C. are organizing a scrap metal collection from Monday 23rd May to Saturday 11th June to raise funds for the club. The collection point is the ground behind the stand. This will not cost you anything and you will be doing your bit for the environment as well as generating much needed funds for the club. Large items such as old cars, tractors,trailers, diggers,engines, old farm machinery, steel oil tanks etc will be accepted. Household items ie washing machines, dishwashers,toasters,steel gutters and down pipes, radiators, cookers etc will also be accepted. Please note NO televisions, fridges, gas bottles, beer kegs or tyres can be accepted. Eucharistic Congress Bell
The Eucharistic Congress Bell was carried through our parish by volunteers as part of its journey through every diocese in Ireland, on Thursday morning last. From the fall o water to Lisdeegan it was carried by the following people Gabriel McGerty, Ann Mc Gerty, Pat Keenan, Rita Smith, Una Fitzsimons, Patsy Fitzpatrick, Ben Brady, John Brady, Shane Curran, Geraldine and James Galligan, Paddy Curran, Eugene Smth, Fr Pat Bannon and Betty Smith. There was a short stop at Drung Chapel where they were met by pupils and teachers from St Mary’s N.S. They were also met by people who were at the school during the 1932 Congress. Many thanks to Eamonn Denning who had tea and biscuits ready to refresh the walkers as they arrived in Drung.

Drung N.S Past Pupils Reunion
A committee has been formed to organize this reunion which will take place on the first weekend of August 2012.People are asked to look up any old photographs for a book which will be published to mark the occasion. President’s Visit
Last Wednesday morning was a historic occasion in our community when President Mary McAleese visited Bunnoe Community Centre. There was a large attendance present for what was a lovely social event. President McAleese addressed the large attendance and paid great tribute to all the people who worked hard over a long number of years to bring this project to fruition. The President unveiled a plaque in the centre to commemorate her visit. On behalf of the community Alice Cassidy presented President McAleese with a copy of a book entitled ‘Sweet Bunnoe, Its schools and its people’ while Elizabeth Dawson presented her with a bouquet of flowers as tokens of our appreciation. Great credit is due to all the committee and local volounteers who worked diligently on the day and in previous days in preparation for this historic visit.

Fr Benny Maguire
There was sadness throughout the local area with the news of the death of Fr Benny Maguire on Sunday morning. A native of Crosserlough, he served as curate in Bunnoe from 1975 to 1982. A keen GAA man he was part of the great Crosserlough 7-in a row team. He managed the Cavan County team in the mid to late 1970’s and he also managed the St Pats Hogan Cup winning team in 1972. In 1980 he led the local Drung team to Junior Championship glory. Fr Benny was also a very active fisherman and spent many hours fishing on Lough Sheelin. Aside from his sporting duties he carried out his clerical duties diligently and gave generously of his time to his parishioners who hold fond memories of his time in the community. Sympathy is extended to his brothers Philip, Crosserlough, Seamus, Mullingar, sister Mary Matthews, Virginia, nephews, nieces relatives and friends.

Mr Charlie Smith
The unexpected death took place last week of Charlie Smith, Dunboyne, Co Meath and formerly of Drumbo, Lisboduff. Mary Kate McCaul
The death took place on Wednesday last of Mary Kate [May] McCaul of Highfield Road, Cavan and formerly Corrinshigo ,Bunnoe, at Lisdarn Unit for the elderly after a short illness. In her ninetieth year she was a very active lady up until very recently. A quiet friendly lady of great faith May will be sadly missed by all who were privileged to know her. She is survived by her brothers Thomas in Shercock, Aidan in Cork, her sisters Margaret, Lisarney and Nan, Navan, nephews and nieces and a wide circle of friends. Her funeral Mass took place in the Cathedral of St Patrick and Felim Cavan with burial afterwards in Bunnoe Cemetary.

Mr John Fitzsimons
The death took place in Detroit, U.S.A. of John Fitzsimons formerly from Edragole Lisboduff on Wednesday last. John who emigrated many years ago was a well known footballer with Drung G.f.c. along with his brothers.
He is survived by his three sons and two daughters, brothers Tony, Dessie,and Joe and his sister Philomena, nephews nieces relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended

Sympathy Is extended to Bridie Fitzpatrick wife of Philip Fitzpatrick [Bunnoe and Liverpool] on the death of her brother Packie McInerney Killeshandra, which occurred last week.

Congratulations
To Jim McDonnell on being selected on the Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup Team of the century at midfield. Jim played his college football with U.C.D in Dublin and was one of only two Cavan players to receive this prestigious award, the other being the late P. J. Duke Stradone.

Mr Pat Fay
There was widespread shock and sadness at the unexpected death of Pat Fay Corravahan Drung at Cavan General Hospital on Wednesday last. Born and reared in Tullybrick, Maghera, Pat later emigrated to London where he worked for EMI record company for many years. He married Anna May Smith, Cavanrainey, Drung in 1977. They returned to Ireland a few years later and bought a supermarket in Ballybay. They moved to Corravahan Drung in the mid nineties . Aged 75 years Pat was a hard working, quiet spoken, inoffensive man who was held in great respect by all who knew him. Pat was predeceased by his son Sean in 2000, and his brother Thomas, and is survived by his wife Anna May, sons Padraig, Colm and Dermot, daughter, Helen, grandchildren Aoife and Eadaoin, brothers Hughie, Longfield; Eugene, Tullybrick and Peter, Bunnoe; sisters Nan and Mary, London, brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews and nieces, to whom sympathy is extended. There was a very large attendance at his funeral mass at the Church of The Immaculate Conception, Drung on Friday morning which was concelebrated by Fr Pat Bannon, Fr Gabriel Kelly, Fr Noel Boylan, Fr Johnny Cusack and Fr Gerard Cusack. Burial took place to adjoining cemetery.

Bunnoe boxing club
Bunnoe A.B.C. had a very busy schedule last weekend where they were in action in the Smithboro tournament in The Skule Inn, on Friday night. A great night included a top class display from Terry McEntee who defeated the Ulster champion from Omagh, and also Stephen McCooey who had a close contest with his Navan opponent. Aaron Kenny, Donal Keappock and Michael McCooey all fought well in exhibition bouts. On Sunday they travelled to Clones A.B.C. for the Cavan/ Monaghan exhibition show. This coming weekend sees Terry McEntee and Stephen McCooey travel to Clonoe to compete in the Ulster novices. Training continues on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.

Drung G.F.C. Variety Show.
The show which took place last weekend was a great success with full house on each of the four nights. Great credit is due to the entire cast and back up teams and also producers Martin O Rourke and Ben Brady. The cast contained a host of local talent who entertained their large audiences with comedy, music, song and dance. Plans are already afoot for the 2012 show with the cast looking forward to rehearsals next November.

Mr Michael Mulvanny
The death took place last weekend of Michael Mulvanny, Drumbran, Cloverhill, Redhills. Predeceased by his wife Addie, he is survived by his son Barry,Rehills, daughters Breege o Reilly, Drumskelt, Helena Meehan, Cloverhill, Frances O Neill, Drumliffe and Marcella in Dublin; his brothers, John and Austin, Belturbet, Brendan and Vincent, Dublin, his sisters,Josephine Conaty, Bunnoe and Kathleen O Reilly, Butlersbridge, grandchildren, nephews and nieces to whom sympathy is extended. There was a large attendance at his removal and funeral Mass which took place in St Bridgets Church Killoughter with burial in adjoining cemetery..

Mrs Molly Fitzgerald
The death took place last week in Dublin of Molly Fitzgerald formerly Fitzpatrick Bunnoe. Predeceased by her husband Maurice 17 years ago she is survived by her son Sean and daughter Siobhan, brothers Philip, England; Mick and John, Bunnoe; sisters Peggy, England and Bridgie, Cootehill, brothers in law, sister in law, nieces and nephews to whom sympathy is extended. Her funeral took place in Dublin on Saturday last.

Sympathy is extended to Michael Coyle, Lisarney, and his family on the tragic death of his brother Tom in London last week following an accident.

Mrs Mona Hartley
The death took place last week of Mrs Mona Hartley, Corrovoggy at Cavan General Hospital after a long illness bravely borne. She is survived by her husband Willie, daughter Cliona, son in law Brian, grandchildren Amy and Eva, brother Bobby Watson, Cootehill, sisters Eva and Iris, Larne; nephews and nieces, brothers in law,sisters in law, relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. Her funeral service took place in Drung Church Of Ireland with burial in adjoining churchyard.

Mrs Susan Fay
The death occurred on Sunday last of Mrs Susan Fay, Ashfield at Cavan General Hospital. In her 97th year she was one of the oldest residents of the area. Susan was a hard working , good living woman. A great friend and neighbour she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Predeceased by her husband John in 1990 and her daughter Rose a year ago, she is survived by her son Anthony, Ashfield; daughters Mary Kelly, Cootehill; Susan Fay, Scotshouse and Philomena McCluskey, Shercock; sons in law, her brother Patrick Murphy,Scotshouse, sister Anne Connelly, Scotshouse, grand children, great grandchildren relatives and friends. Her funeral Mass took place in Bunnoe Church on Tuesday with burial in adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Anne Fay
The death took place on Wednesday last of Mrs Mary Anne Fay, Drumherriffe, Lisboduff, [nee Hennessy Clonervy, Castletara] at Cavan General Hospital.. A quiet spoken and well respected lady Mary Anne was a hard worker and a great neighbour and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. In her 91st year she spent her last two years in Castlemanor Nursing Home. Predeceased by her husband Hugh [Sonny], in 1986 she is survived by her son Brian, Drumherriffe, Grandchildren, Brian and Nora, Brother John, Clonervy, Castletara; Sisters, Ellie in Brighton, England, Lizzie in Newcastle, Co Down, Sister in law Susan Hennessy, Dublin, nephews and nieces, relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. There was a large attendance at her funeral which took place in Bunnoe on Friday last.

Mrs Anna Greenan
There was widespread sadness throughout the parish and wider areas with the news of the death of Mrs Anna Greenan, Millview Crescent, Bunnoe and formerly Liscannon, Drung on Tuesday last at Cavan General Hospital. Anna was in her 84th year and had been in failing health for some time. She was a very friendly woman , of great faith, a hard worker and highly respected by all who knew her and this was borne out by the huge crowds who attended Mullens Funeral Home where she reposed, and also her funeral Mass which took place in The Church of the Immaculate Conception Drung. Predeceased by her husband Phil she is survived by her sons, Aodhgan, [Galway], Gerry [Bunnoe], T. P.[Liscannon], Owen[Cootehill], Sean [Lettermore], her daughters, Marie [Portlaois], Bridie [Cavan] and Rosaleen [London], brothers Owen Smith Lisbree, and James Smith, Canada, grandchildren , nephews and nieces,relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. Her burial took place in Drung Cemetary.

Mrs Norah Crossan
The death occurred on Friday last of Mrs Norah Crossan, Killycreeney,at Esker Lodge nursing home. One of the oldest members of the community Norah was in her 96th year. A lifelong pioneer, she was a hard worker and deeply religious lady who’s door was always open to her many friends and neighbours who regularly visited her. A very well respected lady she remained in her home in Killycreeney with her son Gerry until three years ago when her failing health meant she needed full time care and went to reside in Esker Lodge Nursing where she was cared for until her death last week. Predeceased by her husband Michael in 1977 and her son Aidan in 1981, She is survived by her sons Gerry, Killycreeney, Michael, Monaghan; Brendan, Dublin and Des , Cavan; daughtersin law, her grandchildren and great grandchildren to whom sympathy is extended. Her funeral Mass took place in St Patricks Church Corick , with burial in adjoining cemetery.

Charity Football Match
Great credit is due to the ladies and men who turned out on St Stephens Day to play in snowy and bitterly cold conditions and also the spectators who cheered them on to raise funds for Drumlin House. There was also a raffle in the Stray Sod afterwards and the total raised on the day was 962 euros.

Please note weekend Masses will revert to Saturday night 8.30pm in Bunnoe and Sunday morning in Drung at 11am as from January 1st.

Charity Football Match
On St Stephens in Bunnoe at 2.30pm. Men and Ladies will take part in this novel event with all proceeds in aid of Drumlin House Cootehill. Volountary subscriptions will be collected at gate. Refreshments afterwards in The Stray Sod. Boots or no boots your participatation in this event will be appreciated for this worthy cause.

Noel Fitzpatrick, Kevin Reilly, Padraig Cusack, Sean Reilly and Ciaran Fitzpatrick who recently completed the Dublin City Marathon raised 5,704 Euros for St Christophers Hospice, Cavan. They would like to thank everyone who supported them.

School Concert
Lisboduff National School pupils had their annual concert in Bunnoe Community Centre on Sunday last. The pupils put on an excellent show and great credit is due to them and their teachers Mrs Kathleen Leddy, Miss May Connelly, Miss Kathy Dempsey and Miss Imelda o Reilly, and the Parents Association for the work the put into this enjoyable event. The day was completed with the visit of Santa Claus.

Mrs Bridie Hughes

There was widespread sorrow and regret at the untimely death of Bridie Hughes, Drumlin Crescent, Cootehill and formerly Cavanrainey, Drung, which took place on Monday last after a long illness bravely borne. Bridie was very well known and respected in the locality and wider community and will be sadly missed by all who were priveliged to know her. She is survived by her partner Pat, son Frankie, daughters, Jenny and Paula, brother James Smith, Corravahan, Drung; sisters, Kathleen Daly, Ardglushin; Anna May Fay Coravahan, Drung; Philomena Keenan, Lisnageer, daughter in law, Brothers in law, sister in law, Conor, and a wide circle of relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. Her funeral mass took place in St Michaels Church Cootehill on Wednesday 24th November with burial in adjoining.cemetary.

St Aidans Got Talent

Mr Paul Reilly

The death occurred in New York of Paul Reilly, late of Corcora Lisboduff on Sunday 6^th November after a short illness. Paul is survived by his wife Kathleen [nee Shalvey Maudabawn], sons Michael and Barry, daughters Annamarie and Maggie, seven grandchildren, brother Benny, Corcora; sisters, Jinnie McDonald, Butlersbridge, Mary English, New York, Roseann McDonald, Belturbet and Bridie Nugent, Belfast, nephews and nieces to whom sympathy is extended. He was predeceased by his brother Hugh seven years ago. An ardent follower of the GAA, Paul was also a keen golfer and fisherman. His burial took place on Thursday last in New York.

Stop the Immigration, Residence and Protection Bill 20Join us to the DEMONSTRATION to be held on THURSDAY the 11th of NOVEMBER at 5.30pm at the Dail in Kildare Street Dublin 2

In a socio-economic situation that is becoming increasingly hostile to ordinary people, the government is about to implement a new piece of legislation to further destabilise the lives of migrants and their families in Ireland. This bill is just proceeding through committee stage.

We believe that the Immigration, Residence and Protection Bill 2010 is highly unjust. It creates a culture of fear and it maintains and increases state’s racism. For example, as it stands the Bill authorizes the Gardai to pull over and question any person they believe doesn’t have legal residence in the country. This will most likely lead to a process of screening according to skin colour. Moreover, Irish citizens will not have a statutory right to be joined by non Irish family members in Ireland, which constitutes a “reverse discrimination” in comparison to the rights that apply to other EU citizens under the EU Free Movement Directive (2004/38EC). In addition, the IRP Bill will further undermine the rights of migrants who study and work at the university, by maintaining the exclusion of asylum seekers from 3rd level education and by prohibiting students from applying for long term residency in Ireland.
We are calling for your support in order to stop this shameful piece of legislation to be applied.

The Gardai should not be enabled to harass people on the base of their ‘racial profile’

Mr John Duggan

The death took place last week of John Duggan Ballyhaise. Aged 91 years he was well known in this locality where he was a member of the Drung championship winning team of 1947. John is survived by his sons Mike and Steve, daughters Monica and Cecilia, brothers, and sisters to whom sympathy is extended. His removal took place in Ballyhaise Chapel on Friday evening where guards of honour were formed by members of Drung and Ballyhaise football clubs. His burial took place in Castletara cemetery on Saturday.

Mr Harry Argue

There was widespread shock and sadness at the sudden death of Mr Harry Argue Doohasson, Drung on Tuesday last. Harry was a renowned cattle dealer and was well known at fairs and marts throughout the country over a long number of years. He was attending Ballyjamesduff mart on Tuesday last 19th when he became ill and he died shortly afterwards. He was seventy seven years old. He is survived by his wife Betty, sons, Henry, Georgie and David, grandchildren relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended. His funeral service took place in Drung Church of Ireland with burial in adjoining Churchyard.

The annual Bunnoe Crackers show has been planned for 18^th, 19^th 20^th March.

Death of Mr Gerry Fay

The death took place at his home in Birmingham of Gerry Fay formerly of Longfield, Lisboduff on Thursday 30^th September. In his early sixties, Gerry emigrated to England in 1969. He married Rose Reilly from Drumcondra in 1970 and they settled in Hall Green, Birmingham. A plasterer by trade, he made many friends through his work and this was borne out by the large attendance at the removal of his remains and Mass at The Holy Souls Church, Acocks Green on Wednesday evening. Gerry was a very happy and friendly man who was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He suffered ill health at the age of 50 but continued to enjoy life. He had a successful kidney transplant over four years ago which gave him a new lease of life but unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer three months ago. His illnesses were borne with great dignity. His remains arrived in Killoughter Church on Thursday evening last and his burial took place in adjoining cemetery on Friday morning. His funeral Mass was concelebrated by Fr Pat Bannon, Fr Felim McGovern, and Fr Johnny Cusack. He is survived by his wife Rose, sons Ciaran and Padraig, grandchildren Tom and Anne, brothers Paddy, Bunnoe; Tommy,London; sisters Moyra Wynne, Sligo; Bridie Culligy, London; Eileen Learnihan,London and Betty Smith Drung to whom sympathy is extended.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, son, Thomas, daughter in law, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces to whom sympathy is extended. His funeral took place in Killeshandra on Tuesday.

Five local men have been preparing very hard in recent months for the Dublin city marathon which takes place on Monday 25^th October. The men in question are Noel Fitzpatrick, lisarney; Sean Reilly, Coolcanadis, Padraig Cusack, Bunnoe, Kevin Reilly, Drumcondra, Drung and Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Lislin. They are hoping to raise funds for St Christophers Hospice Cavan. Sponsorship can be given to these men or through sponsorship cards in Bunnoe Agri Supplies.

Mr Jimmy Cassells

The death took place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Wednesday last of Jimmy Cassells formerly from Lisnageer. Jimmy who was in his mid nineties emigrated to England in his youth and later moved to Canada where he spent the rest of his life. Through the years he was a regular visitor back to the area where he spent time with his nephews and nieces in Brady’s Lislin. Jimmy had a great love of dancing and travelled to various carnivals and dances throughout the region. In Canada worked in the mines and also as a pipefitter. He was a highly respected citizen of the area and looked after a lot of Irish people who came to work there. The last surviving member of his family, he is survived by his nephews and nieces to whom sympathy is extended. At the time of writing his funeral details were not known.

Sympathy.

Sympathy is extended to Teresa McCooey Duncollog on the recent death of her mother Mrs Mary Halton, Griffith Park, Cootehill. Mary passed away at her residence in the loving care of her family after a long illness bravely borne. She is survived by her husband Paddy, sons Kevin and Seamus, daughters Teresa and Fidelma, brothers Noel and Michael in Cavan, sister Eileen in Belturbet, grandchildren, mother in law, father in law and a wide circle of friends. Her funeral mass and burial took place in Cootehill.

Congratulations

Are extended to James Reilly, Drumcondra who married Rachael Clarke Crosserlough on Saturday last. James is currently Drung goalie and has served Cavan and Ulster well over the last number of years. We wish himself and Rachael well for the future.

Sympathy

Sympathy is extended to Pat Fay Killarue on the recent death of his wife Margaret in Birmingham. She is also survived by her children Brian, Pauline, John, Sharon, Stephen, Dawn and Ian. Her funeral took place in Birmingham.

Bunnoe Summer Festival

The annual Summer Festival will take place on weekend Friday 11^th June to Sunday13th June. The festival opens on the Friday night with comedy hypnotist Mike McCoy appearing in the community centre at 9.30pm. He will provide a comedy show followed by 60s disco. On Saturday afternoon we have a fly casting competition and also a smartie party for the kiddies. Saturday night we have a ceoltas night with Martin Donohoe and friends with a barbecue and bar extension. Sunday is our family sports day at 1.30pm with events for all the family. Early start due to club matches in the evening. On Sunday evening we have novelty football and tug o war followed by music by local artists in community centre at 10.pm.

Recyling

The Green School Committee from Lisboduff N.S. would like people to recycle old household batteries with them. Collection points will be located in the school,the community centre and Bunnoe Agri Supplies.Old batteries are harmful to the environment and recyling is a better option than sending them to landfill. The Green Schools Committee are working towards their second Green Flag for energy and also towards renewing their first Litter and Waste flag.

Football Success

Congratulations to St Finbarrs Under 16 team who won the division 2 league defeating Ballymachugh in the final in Stradone on Tuesday last. The large attendance were treated to a splendid game between two very talented teams. The panel who took part were Niall Smith, Aron Watson, Ciaran Smith, Tomas Jackson, Stephen Jackson, Damian Reilly, Cormac Fitzpatrick,Caolan Reilly, Lorcan Coyle, Gary Watters, Francis Hand, Damian o Brien, Shane McCann, Brian Crowe, Aron McIntyre, Ian Middleton, Brendan Brady, Gary Tiernan, Kieran Reilly and Kevin Pritchard. St Finbarrs Under 14 girls completed a very successful week in the parish when they won the Division 3 league at Breffni Park on Thursday evening when they accounted for a gallant Templeport team in the final. Congratulations to Evelyn McDonald, Dunmurray who married Terry O Neill from Clones in Bunnoe Church on Saturday week last. Reception took place in The Raddison Hotel Cavan. We wish them well for the future.

Died in Australia

Brian Cusack, Bunnoe died last week in Bundaberg, Queensland Australia. Brian emigrated to Australia in 1969 where he worked as an engineer. He had recently retired and was approaching his 67^th birthday.His great faith meant a lot to him. The funeral mass was celebrated in Holy Rosary Parish Church, Bundaberg. He is survived by his wife Dorothy and four daughters. He is also survived in Ireland by his brothers Eddie , Bunnoe; Noel, Dublin; Fr. Gerard, Kilnacrott; sisters, Margaret, Cashel; Marie, Cavan and Philomena, Cootehill. A requiem Mass will be celebrated in St Mary’s Church Bunnoe on Sunday 18^th July at 11am. May he rest in peace with our merciful Lord.

Fr Vincent Maguire says thanks

Golden Jubilarian, Fr Vincent Maguire, Comboni missionary, Corrinshigo and Uganda was truly delighted with the celebrations in Bunnoe. The Mass and cuppa in the community centre was a very enjoyable occasion. He is most grateful to everyone and pledges a rememberance in masses and prayers. The suitably inscribed wallet with notes was a great surprise. Many thanks to all. He hopes to return to Bunnoe next year as Bunnoe Brass Band celebrates its 125^th anniversary! A dvd of the occasion is being edited and should available shortly from Padraig at Bunnoe Agri Stores, telephone 049-5553212.

Mrs Anne Dempsey

There was widespread regret at the recent death of Mrs Anne Dempsey Doocarrick, Lisnageer. Aged 103 years she died peacefully at Mullinahinch Nursing Home , Monaghan. Her remains reposed at the residence of her son Anthony prior to removal to St Patricks Church Corick and burial in adjoining cemetery. Predeceased by her husband Ben in 1971, she is survived by her sister Mrs Agnes O Hagan; sons Anthony, Doocarrick; Brian,Drumbartha, Pat, Drumconrath; her daughters; Mary, Anne,Yvonne and Patricia; her 23 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; relatives and friends to whom sympathy is extended.

Died in Drogheda

The death took place in Drogheda last week of Paul O Reilly formerly from Bunnoe. Paul was born 86 years ago and resided with his parents in Pottle East in what was known as the woodhouse. In his youth he also resided with the Cusack family Bunnoe. Paul spent most of his working life in the restaurant business where himself and his wife Peggy owned The Carlton Restaurant in Drogheda’s Narrow West Street. They had three sons and three daughters. Deepest sympathy is extended to his family and friends. His funeral took place on Monday last in St Mary’s Church Drogheda.

please note for your diary the next Meath Intercultural Network meeting will take place on Thursday 16th September from 11 am to 1 pm in the Boardroom of the Ardboyne hotel.

A meeting in advance at 10 am will take place with a delegation from the Office of the Minister for Integration and Finland who are exploring work happening in Ireland on integration issues.

We are suggesting that members of the MIN executive (who are meeting this week to plan the september meeting) attend the 10 am meeting with the delegation with the normal meeting going ahead at 11.00 am (if other people are also interested in attending this meeting can you let me know, all are welcome)

As we have a room booked for the meeting if people can come back to me re their attendance so we can organise teas/coffees etc

Tendering & Funding Application Training.

This one day training will be held in the Hotel Kilmore Cavan on Saturday 14^th August.

Registration will be at 10am for 10.30 start. We will be finishing at 4.30pm.

Media Training

Sorry to everyone for not being able to organize this training on a Saturday instead of a Sunday but the dates were all booked up with training until October. The training will take place in the Breffni Integrated Offices at the following times and days

a) Sunday 15^th August 2010 at 2pm – 7pm (5 hours)

b) Thursday 26^th August at 7pm – 10pm (3 hours)

c) Sunday 12^th September at 9am – 5pm (full day) if a large percentage of people are attending church in the morning there is no problem with moving the start times forward to 11am or 12 but you would need to let me know.

AFRICA CARIBBEAN FORUM TRAINING FOR THE YOUTH

Delivered in Craigavon and Co., Cavan
by the 1825 Project Ltd, Craigavon.

The training will run over three 12 week cycles beginning September 2010 and is aimed at 18 - 25 year old young people from Craigavon, Co., Armagh and County Cavan.

All transport is provided and childcare contribution is payable to participants who require childcare. Qualifications in Peer Leadershiip, Conflict Management, Community Volunteering and personal development will equip young people with skills, knowledge and experience to develop their aspirations and life goals.

AFRICA DAY CELEBRATION

Africa Day Festival Event to Take Place in Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens

African food, music, games and customs will be showcased at Irish Aid’s Africa Day Dublin, which takes place in the Iveagh Gardens on Sunday, 16th May. The event will be family-focused, with specific elements for children, including giant snakes and ladders, family treasure hunts, sports and art activities.

The Africa Day Dublin event will run from 12 noon until 7pm, and entry is free of charge. Access will be through the Clonmel Street (just off Harcourt Street) entrance to the Iveagh Gardens, and visitors are advised to use public transport to travel to the venue, as parking will be severely limited in the area.

Africa Day Dublin is hosted by Irish Aid, Ireland’s overseas development programme. Some of the highlights will include:

Music

The Main Stage at Africa Day Dublin will feature an attractive line-up of both African and Irish performers. Congolese musician Niwel Tsumbu and Irish musician Dave Flynn have developed a special Africa Day collaboration and will perform together at the event. Senegalese kora master and griot, Solo Cissokho, will perform, as will Choice Music Prize winner Jape; trad Irish act Fidil; The Amazing Few; the Discovery Gospel Choir, and the Newpark Afro-Cuban Orchestra.

There will also be a second stage at the event – Stage Two – featuring a range of African and Irish rappers, hip-hop artists, DJs and bands over the course of the day. Highlights will include sets by Groovalizacion DJs; Funzo; Madu, and DJ Wax.

African Bazaar

In the African Bazaar, visitors to Africa Day Dublin can take a crash course in Ugandan or Bini dancing; learn some simple Swahili phrases; model traditional Kasai costumes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, or try out a tent used by the Taureg nomads of Mali. There will also be hair-braiding; traditional Nigerian masquerade performers; Abyssinian and Afro-Caribbean music; African board games; delicious food samples from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Cameroon, and arts and crafts displays from all over Africa. A ‘Best Dressed’ competition will take place over the course of the day, with prizes for those dressed in the most colourful African attire.

Food

This year at Africa Day Dublin, there will be several African food vendors offering a wide variety of authentic African food and drinks for visitors to purchase. There will also be a workshop on African food hosted by Ross Golden-Bannon, Editor of FOOD&WINE Magazine, who will be joined by a range of high-profile panellists, such as celebrity chef and cookery tutor Rozanne Stevens (originally from South Africa) and celebrity food blogger Donal Skehan.

Education Zone

In the Education Zone, visitors to Africa Day Dublin can find out more about development issues through participating in fun, family-friendly activities - try on traditional Mauritanian clothes; visit the ‘Because I Am A Girl’ photo exhibition; plant a seed to grow a vegetable commonly eaten in Africa, or take part in a jigsaw puzzle competition. Visitors can also take part in drumming contests, have their hands painted with henna tattoos, and test their knowledge of African countries and foods.

Speakers’ Corner

The Speakers’ Corner at Africa Day Dublin will feature a range of workshops over the course of the day, including an Africa Day Book Club discussion on the classic novel ‘Things Fall Apart’ by Chinua Achebe. Chaired by Seán Rocks, presenter of the ‘Arena’ arts programme on RTÉ Radio 1, panellists will include Newstalk presenter Orla Barry, award-winning writer Claire Kilroy; journalist Roisin Ingle; South African writer Thabi Madide, and Chinedu Onyejelem, Editor of Metro Éireann.

A discussion on ‘How to Build Ireland’s Engagement with Africa’ will also take place, with input from the Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power TD. Chaired by RTÉ newsreader Bryan Dobson, discussion panellists will include Justin Kicullen, Director of Trócaire; broadcaster and travel writer Manchán Magan, and Salome Mbugua, Director of AkiDwA, the African Women’s Network.

Sports and Play area

Children visiting Africa Day Dublin can try their hand at traditional African games, such as Ingoma Bawo, the Malawian version of an ancient African board game. They can also enter quizzes and jigsaw puzzle competitions; participate in a drumming workshop; learn how to make traditional Ugandan toys out of banana fibres, and take part in African-themed art activities.

Sports activities will be offered by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and the GAA, who will be hosting numerous activities over the course of the day. Ex-All-Ireland winning hurler, George O'Connor, will be at the event to demonstrate basic hurling skills and encourage visitors to try their hand at the game.

Music Tent

A number of workshops with Main Stage performers will take place in the Music Tent over the course of Africa Day Dublin, including a drumming workshop with members of the Discovery Gospel Choir; a discussion of the Senegalese griot tradition with Solo Cissokho, and a workshop on the influence of African music on jazz and Latin music.

The following pupils from lisboduff N.S. received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion in Bunnoe Church on Saturday last. Oniosa Fitzsimons, Emely O Reilly, Meabh McDonnell and Ryan O Reilly. Fr pat Bannon Officiated and their teacher is Mrs Anne Donnellan.

Confirmation

Bishop Leo O Reilly confirmed pupils from the parish of Kill-Drung in Kill Church on Friday evening last. The following pupils recieved the Sacrament; Lisboduff N.S. Cian Jackson, Louise Fitzpatrick, Saoirse Fay, Mairead Smith, Shannon Watson, Kevin Traynor and John James Tully, Drung N.S. Roisin Curren, Nial McAdam, Michaela Gaffney, Sean Donohoe, Sean Denning, Ashling Greenan and Jamie O Reilly, Kill N.S. Emmet McGee, Connor McMahon, Matthew McCaul, Hannah Murray, Shannon O Flynn, Claire Clarke McGinn, Erin McQuillan and Aoibhinn McPhillips. Refugee Support

Local girl Catherine Daly , Ardglushin is undertaking voluntary work in Nu Po refugee Camp in the Thi/Burma border for ten months. As part of her fund raising effort, a raffle will take place in The Stray Sod next Sunday night 11th. April. Tickets are available from Bunnoe Agri. Supplies, The Stray Sod and any Daly family members. Please support this worthy cause.
