The Outcomes

The overall outcomes of the day training are as follows: the capacity to understand the interaction between the environment and human activity; to identify local environmental issues in one's area; and lastly, to develop an environmental action plan and to undertake an environmental action project with young people/community groups

By the end of the day participants will:

AFRICA DAY CELEBRATION

Africa Day Festival Event to Take Place in Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens

African food, music, games and customs will be showcased at Irish Aid’s Africa Day Dublin, which takes place in the Iveagh Gardens on Sunday, 16th May. The event will be family-focused, with specific elements for children, including giant snakes and ladders, family treasure hunts, sports and art activities.

The Africa Day Dublin event will run from 12 noon until 7pm, and entry is free of charge. Access will be through the Clonmel Street (just off Harcourt Street) entrance to the Iveagh Gardens, and visitors are advised to use public transport to travel to the venue, as parking will be severely limited in the area.

Africa Day Dublin is hosted by Irish Aid, Ireland’s overseas development programme. Some of the highlights will include:

Music

The Main Stage at Africa Day Dublin will feature an attractive line-up of both African and Irish performers. Congolese musician Niwel Tsumbu and Irish musician Dave Flynn have developed a special Africa Day collaboration and will perform together at the event. Senegalese kora master and griot, Solo Cissokho, will perform, as will Choice Music Prize winner Jape; trad Irish act Fidil; The Amazing Few; the Discovery Gospel Choir, and the Newpark Afro-Cuban Orchestra.

There will also be a second stage at the event – Stage Two – featuring a range of African and Irish rappers, hip-hop artists, DJs and bands over the course of the day. Highlights will include sets by Groovalizacion DJs; Funzo; Madu, and DJ Wax.

African Bazaar

In the African Bazaar, visitors to Africa Day Dublin can take a crash course in Ugandan or Bini dancing; learn some simple Swahili phrases; model traditional Kasai costumes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, or try out a tent used by the Taureg nomads of Mali. There will also be hair-braiding; traditional Nigerian masquerade performers; Abyssinian and Afro-Caribbean music; African board games; delicious food samples from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Cameroon, and arts and crafts displays from all over Africa. A ‘Best Dressed’ competition will take place over the course of the day, with prizes for those dressed in the most colourful African attire.

Food

This year at Africa Day Dublin, there will be several African food vendors offering a wide variety of authentic African food and drinks for visitors to purchase. There will also be a workshop on African food hosted by Ross Golden-Bannon, Editor of FOOD&WINE Magazine, who will be joined by a range of high-profile panellists, such as celebrity chef and cookery tutor Rozanne Stevens (originally from South Africa) and celebrity food blogger Donal Skehan.

Education Zone

In the Education Zone, visitors to Africa Day Dublin can find out more about development issues through participating in fun, family-friendly activities - try on traditional Mauritanian clothes; visit the ‘Because I Am A Girl’ photo exhibition; plant a seed to grow a vegetable commonly eaten in Africa, or take part in a jigsaw puzzle competition. Visitors can also take part in drumming contests, have their hands painted with henna tattoos, and test their knowledge of African countries and foods.

Speakers’ Corner

The Speakers’ Corner at Africa Day Dublin will feature a range of workshops over the course of the day, including an Africa Day Book Club discussion on the classic novel ‘Things Fall Apart’ by Chinua Achebe. Chaired by Seán Rocks, presenter of the ‘Arena’ arts programme on RTÉ Radio 1, panellists will include Newstalk presenter Orla Barry, award-winning writer Claire Kilroy; journalist Roisin Ingle; South African writer Thabi Madide, and Chinedu Onyejelem, Editor of Metro Éireann.

A discussion on ‘How to Build Ireland’s Engagement with Africa’ will also take place, with input from the Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power TD. Chaired by RTÉ newsreader Bryan Dobson, discussion panellists will include Justin Kicullen, Director of Trócaire; broadcaster and travel writer Manchán Magan, and Salome Mbugua, Director of AkiDwA, the African Women’s Network.

Sports and Play area

Children visiting Africa Day Dublin can try their hand at traditional African games, such as Ingoma Bawo, the Malawian version of an ancient African board game. They can also enter quizzes and jigsaw puzzle competitions; participate in a drumming workshop; learn how to make traditional Ugandan toys out of banana fibres, and take part in African-themed art activities.

Sports activities will be offered by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) and the GAA, who will be hosting numerous activities over the course of the day. Ex-All-Ireland winning hurler, George O'Connor, will be at the event to demonstrate basic hurling skills and encourage visitors to try their hand at the game.

Music Tent

A number of workshops with Main Stage performers will take place in the Music Tent over the course of Africa Day Dublin, including a drumming workshop with members of the Discovery Gospel Choir; a discussion of the Senegalese griot tradition with Solo Cissokho, and a workshop on the influence of African music on jazz and Latin music.

The following pupils from lisboduff N.S. received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion in Bunnoe Church on Saturday last. Oniosa Fitzsimons, Emely O Reilly, Meabh McDonnell and Ryan O Reilly. Fr pat Bannon Officiated and their teacher is Mrs Anne Donnellan.

Confirmation

Bishop Leo O Reilly confirmed pupils from the parish of Kill-Drung in Kill Church on Friday evening last. The following pupils recieved the Sacrament; Lisboduff N.S. Cian Jackson, Louise Fitzpatrick, Saoirse Fay, Mairead Smith, Shannon Watson, Kevin Traynor and John James Tully, Drung N.S. Refugee Support

Local girl Catherine Daly , Ardglushin is undertaking voluntary work in Nu Po refugee Camp in the Thi/Burma border for ten months. As part of her fund raising effort, a raffle will take place in The Stray Sod next Sunday night 11th. April. Tickets are available from Bunnoe Agri. Mrs Sheila Galligan

The death took place on Thursday last of Mrs Sheila Galligan, Drumhilla, Drung. Sheila was a well respected member of the community and this was borne out by the huge attendance at her funeral mass on Saturday morning. She was predeceased by her husband Phil many years ago and is survived by her sons James, Philip, Joseph, Noel, Sean and Edmund, her daughters Bridie and Mary, her brother Owen Smith ,lisbree, James and sister Anna Greenan, sons in-law, daughters-in law, grand-children, great grand-children, nieces and nephews. Her burial took place in Drung cemetery. Fr Pat Bannon officiated.

Mick McCabe

It was with great reget that the people learned of the death of Mick McCabe Corrakeeran on Friday 19th april at Cavan General hospital after a short illness. Aged 86 Mick was a quiet and inoffensive man who was respected by all who knew him. He was predeceased by his brother Pat many years ago and is survived by his sisters Margaret in Scotland and Maryann Fay , Killarue and nieces and nephews to whom sympathy is extended. His burial took place in Bunnoe , Fr Gerry Kearns Killoughter officiated.

Are holding a fund raising Race Night in the Stray Sod on Saturday 17th of April. Horse can be bought or races sponsored through any band members.

Bunnoe Amateur Boxing Clib

Big night in store for local Boxers and local GAA players when a Variety Fight Night takes place in the Errigal House Hotel on Easter Saturday night 3rd April. Doors open @ 7.30. with novice bouts at 8pm. Parade and Variety Boxing starts @ 9.00 pm with lots of local talent. Tickets are 20 euro each which includes admission to disco afterwards. The Variety show in the Community Centre was packed on the three nights.

The large cast gave a splendid performance with lots of comedy, music, song and dance. Great credit is due to them and also to all the people who worked diligently behind the scenes. The DVD of the show is available to buy.

To St Finbars U16 team who won the Christy Sheils tournament in Breffni Park on Saturday. Thirty Three clubs took part over two weekends, so to win was a great achievement. Mrs Teresa Higgins

The death took yook place recently of Mrs Teresa Higgins Drumouna Drung,

Formerly Teresa McEntee lisboduff, she was predeceased by her husband Watty many years ago. She is survived by her son Gary, daughters Carmel and Bernadette to whom deepest sympathy is extended. Her burial took place in Drung.

Died in New Jersey.

The death took place recently in New Jersey of Mary O Donovan Formerly Mary Fitzpatrick, Drumskelt. She emigrated many years ago, but retained a great interest in Bunnoe. In 2003 when Bunnoe Brass Band played in New York on St Patricks Day, mary was on 47th St off 5th Avenue to greet them. Mary was predeceased by her sister Bridgie McQuaid in 1974. She is survived by her brothers Packif in Ballyhaise, Eddie in England and sister Maggie inthe USA, to whom sympathy is extended. A memorial Mass was held in Bunnoe on Saturday night.

Mr Pete Ward.

There was deep shock and sadnessin the locality at the news of the sudden and untimely death of Pete Ward, Corbeagh. A great character and friend to all who knew him. Pete was extremely helpfull to all organizations in the locality and beyond. He was best known for his involvement in drama and in the GAA. He served as chairman of St Finbarrs GFC for many years.Pete would have taught a lot of pupils from our locality during his many years as a teacher in St Aidens Comprehensive in Cootehill. Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Aileen, sons Simon, Eoin and David, daughters Stephanie, Aoife, Juile and Laura, his grandchildren,sisters and brothers.

Bunnoe Amateur Boxing Club

Well done to Stephen Jacksonand Terry McEntee who competed in the mid Ulster Championship last week. Stephen won his division while Terry was defeated in the final of his division after giving a great account of himself. The club are hosting a GAA Boxing event in the Errigal Hotel in the near future with local footballers and boxers competing in the Cavan/Monaghan event.

A Border Region Befrinding Project

Cavan Family Resource Centre has received funding from the EU Peace lll Programme to offer a Befriending Service in Counties Fermanagh, Monaghan, Leitrim and Cavan. Those affected in any way by the Troubles in the Border Region are particularily welcome to avail of this Service.

What is a Befriending Scheme?

A Befriending Scheme is an arrangement where a trained Volunteer visits someone who has very few social outlets. The Volunteer is known as the Befriender and the person being visited is known as the Befriendee.

Befriending is:

Spending time together....
Having fun....
Chatting with a companion you can trust....
Going places together....
Offering encouragement....
Opportunity to meet others....

How often does the Volunteer visit?

Visits are arranged to suit both parties and are agreed by those involved. Normally it will be an hour or two per visit.

How do the Befriender and Befriendee pass the time they spend together?

Activities will have been broadly agreed at the first visit and may include going out for a snack, a social event, a cross-border/cultural event, or just chatting over a cup of tea in the Befriendees' home.

Are there any fees involved in joining the Border Counties Befriending Project?

There are no fees, but the person being visited is liable for the cost of their own social activities.

Are there any activities that a Volunteer cannot get involved in?

The Volunteer Befriender will visit in the role of a 'friend'. The Volunter is not a Counsellor, Dating Partner or Home Help/Carer and will not be in a position to undertake such roles.

Mr Phil Smith.

There is widespread sadness at the untimley death of Mr Phil Smith, Lettermore on the 2nd of January 2010. Phil was a very quiet ,friendly and highly respected member of the community. He was a keen gardner and was also a member of the local gun club. There was a very large attendance at his funeral in Bunnoe. Fr Pat Bannon officiated.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, son Jai, daughters Belinda and patrice, brothers Mick, Pat, Tommy and Eugene, sisters Maggie,Kathleen and Carmel to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

Mr Dan Reilly.

The death took place of at Cavan General Hospital on sunday 3rd January 2010 of Mr Dan Reilly better known as Red Dan . Dan was a very well known character with a great interest football and a great amateur actor taking part in many plays and concerts over 70 years winning at many drama festivals.

Dan had been in failing health for the past year. He is survived by his sister Sue Mc Adam, Clones, to whom seepest sympathy is extended. Burial took place in Bunnoe and Fr pat Bannon officiated.

Mrs Rors Reilly (nee Fay).

There was deep sadness in the area at the death of Rose Reilly, Late of Ashfield. Rose had been in failing health for 2 years but her untimley death came as a shoch to all those who knew her. A devoted wife and mother her lovely nature endeared her to all.

The huge congregation at her funeral Mass was testament to the esteem in which she was held. Deepest sympathy is extended to her husband Jimmy, sons Paul, Seamus and Damien, daughters Dympna and Claire, brother Tony, Sisters Susan, Mary and Mena and mother Susan.

Recruitment drive for next Local Training Initiative Programme

Have you moved to Ireland to work? Are you interested in improving your chances to employment? The next Local Training Initiative course is due to begin March 2010. The programme is specifically geared to enable non-nationals to engage in the labour market.

Course Details

This is a full-time course, 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday.
Trainees get a training allowance and contribution towards childcare costs from FAS.
Eligible participants must register with FAS prior to commencing on the course.
The course duration is 26 weeks.

Programme Details

Communications: FETAC Level determined by participants' abilities. The Communications element of the course aims to improve participants' ability to communicate in the workforce and socially. Other courses particularly in the area of language proficiency that may be of interest to participants can from time to time be accessed through other centres.
Work Experience FETAC Level 4: Participants get to plan and prepare for the working environment. They are given individual assistance in preparing CV's, cover letters, and interview technique. Participants get to complete two weeks work experience ideally in their chosen vocational area.
ECDL: All seven modules are covered, Word-processing, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, File Management, Information and communications, Internet and E-Mail.

On July 21, 2007 Mr. Benedict Onochie Amobi, Chargé d’Affaires of The Federal Republic of Nigeria Launched the Africa Caribbean Forum at the Ardboyne Hotel, Navan, County Meath.

The ACF is company limited by guarantee and is designed to support residents from Africa and the Caribbean as they seek to settle for a while or permanently in the Republic of Ireland. Through the ACF we hope to strengthen the links within the communities and act as a point of reference for the wider Irish society.

The vision of the ACF is to establish branches of the forum in all counties of Ireland. Already branches have been established in Meath and Cavan. We affirm the ideals of participation, recognition, inclusion, protection and provision as key programme pillars. The ACF is acting, collaborating, forging!

The ACF

ACTING, COLLABORATING, FORGING

In December 2007, one resident from the Caribbean and another from Africa met to talk about the situation in their respective communities here in Ireland. It was in that conversation that the idea of the Africa-Caribbean Forum was born. They were both aware of situations where people coming from Africa and the Caribbean went through unnecessary hardships before getting settled.

There was one case of a young woman from Jamaica, who came on an exchange programme, only to discover that the costs of living were way beyond what was anticipated. If it were it not for the assistance of other Jamaicans, who heard of her plight, she would have been made homeless after her money ran out. That network of proved much more important than the social service, which, in any case, does not operate after 5 and on weekends – the very times at which the needs are most acute. There was also the awareness that there were people coming from Africa who were the victims of racial attacks, arising out of fear, ignorance and negative stereotyping.

The question was whether there could be an organisation that would act as a beacon for migrants and one to which members of the broader Irish community could turn to form a better understanding of the cultural norms and values that our people hold, as these are important for self-understanding. It was against that background that the first conversation was held. The inaugural meeting of the Forum was held on December 11, 2006 and, as the saying goes, “the rest in history.”

Projects

Our first projects will include the establishment of a crèche for services at a price we can afford and a homework programme to assist our kids. We are seeking volunteers to offer help in both projects.

Integrating Ireland is currently developing an integration induction toolkit for secondary school aged immigrant youth and their parents. This toolkit consists of different sections and includes information and links to resources on education, language, youth work, community and family life as well as discrimination and racism in Ireland.

The pilot testing will take place with a group of 10 immigrant youth from outside EU- countries, which are in secondary education and 5 parents of immigrant youth.

1.   Africa
a.   Regions and Languages
Yoruba, Hausa, and Ibo are some of the nearly 400 native languages of Nigeria. Most people in the North African countries speak Arabic and follow Islam. In some parts of North Africa, however, people are multilingual and speak several languages. For example, the official languages of Chad and Djibouti are Arabic and French. In Ethiopia, people may speak one or more of 70 unique languages or 200 different dialects.
More than 1,000 different languages are spoken in Africa. Although most countries in Eastern and Southern Africa have adopted colonial European languages for official government business, most people speak indigenous native languages.

South Africa has 11 official languages
Other languages that are spoken by immigrants include:

Due to the multilingual nature of the country English is widely used as a common language. South Africa follows British English spelling rules.
Nine of the languages are of Bantu origin, of which Zulu is probably the best known internationally. Zulu's brand image is aided by its inclusion into the international phonetics alphabet just after Whisky. X-Ray and Yankee.
Nelson Mandela speaks Xhosa at home, which is another official language fairly similar to Zulu.
The Afrikaans language is descended from Dutch and low German, with influences from French, Bantu, English, Khoi, Malay and a variety of other languages. It has a very simple grammar and is relatively easy to learn to speak in a basic fashion.
There are a number of other languages which didn't make it as official languages, but are nonetheless recognised by the government. Sign language translation is provided on at least one TV news broadcast EVENING
Sudan is the largest country in Africa (8,3 % of the continent). Its boundaries touch those of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Tchad, Egypt, the Republic of Central Africa and Zaire, Uganda, Libya and Kenya; it is traversed by the Nile The White Nile (Bahr al- The Aabiadh) and the Blue Nile (Bahr al-Azraq). The confluence of the two Niles is at Khartoum. The North and East are deserts; the South has a luxurious vegetation characteristic of the equatorial climate. The central part is tropically continental with some rainfall which is very good for vegetation.

b.   Nomads
·         Are on Identity of communities in Africa mostly be found in East, West and North Africa
·         Their culture is similar to the travelling Community
·         They move from country to country or within a country, to sell their agricultural produce, herbal medicines and mineral resources.
·         They are in Clans mostly known as Fulani, Hausa or Tuareg
·         They are in Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Mauritania, Kenya, Mali, Conakry and Sierra Leone.
·         They marry early, at age 15 and practice Poligamy

c.    Legal Status in Ireland (Afro-Celts)

2.            EDUCATION SYSTEMS IN WEST AFRICA
West Africa was colonized by Britain & France. Countries are either Anglo-phone or Franco-phone
Education systems are similar to that of Britain & France
Anglo-phone Primary education used to be seven years. Class 1 – 7.
A selective entrance examination was taken at class 7 for entrance to secondary school.
Secondary school used to be either 5 or 7 years. Form 1-5, lower 6th &     upper 6th form. At form 5, GCSE O’Levels was taken & at upper form 6, GCSE A’Levels.
Entrance to university was either from 5th form (preliminary year in university) or from upper 6th form (first year in university). University is for 4 years for a normal degree, then 12-18 months for a Masters & 24-36 months for a Doctorate.
There are also institutes of education, teacher’s colleges & apprenticeships with mentoring.
Franco-phone education is based on the French system with a baccalaureate exam for entrance to university.
All schools in West Africa teach French, English, German & Latin. These are either compulsory or optional for students.
There are public & private schools as well as missionary schools.
Education standards are high in West Africa with medical & law schools.
Graduates find it easy to continue education in the West or take up skilled labour employment. West African educational certificates are accepted in the West as equivalents.
Anglo-phone educational systems have undergone changes. There is now the junior & senior schooling system like in Ireland.
Primary & secondary school students in public schools have to wear mandatory uniforms.
There aren’t enough bookshops & second-hand book sellers are in abundance.
The first academic university in the region was in Sierra Leone, Fourah Bay College.
The country in the region with the most schools & universities is Nigeria. This is a federal republic & has state & federal universities. Nigeria has the most interruptible schedule for 3rd level education as lecturers go on strikes often for salaries & students also, for better academic environments.
The examining body responsible for the region’s ordinary & advanced level exams is the West African Examination Council.

3.   Religion
Most people in the fourteen independent countries in North Africa are Muslim. The religion they believe in is called Islam. Muslims pray to their god Allah and his prophet Muhammad five times a day facing the city of Mecca. A prophet is someone who is believed to speak for a god. The Koran is the Muslim holy book.
In African countries south of the Sahara Desert, people follow many different religions. Some are Muslim, although the majority of the people are Christian. Missionaries from Ireland and other parts of the world brought Christianity to many countries in Africa. Some people, however, choose to follow traditional religions and believe that natural spirits and ancestors affect everyday life

5. Social and Culture
SPORT
Africans are passionate about football. Afro-Caribbeans are passionate about athletics.West Africa is divided into zones for regional championship matches & for the Africa Cup.

ENTREPRENEURS
Most Africans depend on enterprise for an income. They carry out petty trading in household goods & food items. They also farm at subsistence levels. There are now developing, middle-sized enterprises in Information Technology, Cosmetics & Fashion Couture.

LEISURE/RECREATION
Africans & Afro-Caribbeans have informal ways for relaxation. Mostly after a hard day's work inn manual labour, they go to local pubs or form groups outside their homes on the streets. They like to drink Rum & Palm Wine. Guinness is also popular along with Heineken. They smoke cigarettes such as Rothmans, Marlborough & Dunhill. Youths frequent the many natural beaches at weekends. At Easter, the beaches are also popular & people go in family sizes to celebrate. Naming & Wedding ceremonies are a daily occurrence & this forms part of leisure.

LITERATURE ART & CRAFT

Artists are aplenty, working mostly in depicting family heads & heads of state. They produce portraits & illustrations for the media.
Craftsmanship is rife, depicting daily traditional modes of life. They6 use only wood for carving & most popular carvings are the mortar & pestle & statuettes. They also produce ornaments for home & individual decorations such as gourds & beads.
Literature is mainly the work of the Grit, who is responsible for recording translating & transmitting oral traditions. Writers rarely now use native dialects. Instead, to reach a wider audience, they now write in English or French. Poetry is as a sing-song, read or sung to encourage, admonish or caution within communities. African-Americans have further developed this style to what we now know as 'Rap'.

TABOOS

Dos & Don’ts exist for almost every aspect of life.
A youth cannot look the elder in the eye when that elder is addressing youth. This becomes a problem here when Africans don't maintain eye contact with service providers, who interpret this to be concealment.
One must not leave a slipper or shoe upturned in the house. This may bring about death in the family.
A woman must not open an umbrella over herself in the house. This may bring bad luck in not being 'seen' by men to marry.
One must not sweep or whistle at night in the house. This may drive away or attract spirits.
One must tweet after lightning strikes. This will divert the god of thunder from visiting the family with strikes of lightning.

INTEGRATION

Afro-Caribbeans come to Ireland as immigrants with different legal status.
Some are asylum seekers whose application for asylum. If successful, makes them refugees.
Some are migrant workers who have work visas mainly for the health care sector.
Some are students at 3rd level education who have come to pursue learning the Linguistics, Medicine & Development Aid.
Having resided here, immigrants have residency & after 5 years, can also naturalise.
Those who have unsuccessful asylum applications lose or are exploited in their employment finish studies without going back, for various reasons of political instability or social intolerance in their country of origin may have the legal status- Humanitarian leave to remain.

The ACF was registered in 2008 as Limited Liability Company (CRO Number 459545) and is preparing application for charity status in 2009. It is headed by a voluntary board of directors and had a direct mailing list of 100 persons. The purposes for which the organization was set are: The Cavan project was initiated by Susuana Komolafe, lived in Cavan and acting as the coordinator in County Cavan.

Campa Samhraidh Ghlór Bhréifne

Glór Bhréifne organised a very successful Campa Samhraidh Gaeilge for primary school children, which took place in Butlersbridge National School from the 6^{th – 10th July. Thirty three children attended the Irish language summer camp and they came from a wide area encompassing, Cavan, Butlersbridge, Ballyhaise, Mountnugent, Bailieboro, Cootehill, Belturbet, and Bawnboy. The programme of activities included a wide range of activities trí Ghaeilge, including, arts, sports, dance, drama, games, quizzes and song. The week’s activities culminated with the Siamsa an Champa on Friday, where the children performed for their parents and guardians, some amhráin, damhsa agus dráma, illustrating the Irish that they had learnt and utilised during the week. The children were presented with their ‘Teastas Freastail’, certificate for their participation in the Campa. The Campa Samhraidh was conducted by the following Múinteoirí and Cúntóirí: Caitríona Uí hArtáin, Áine Nic Thiarnáin, Labhaoise Ní Thiarnaigh, Helen Ní Cheartraí agus Gráinne Nic Philib. Glór Bhréifne expressed buíochas mór/sincere thanks to Príomhoide na Scoile, Terry Leddy and the Board of Management of the school for the use of the excellent facilities at Butlersbridge National School. “I did not know where to turn to when I found out my son had a drug addiction. I felt helpless about my situation, I was unhappy, I cried alone, no-one understood and I was heartbroken when things went from bad to worse. A friend told me about Family Support and I went along with her to my first meeting. I have not looked back and look forward to Monday evenings.

I learnt that addiction is an illness, and that I was powerless over it; I learnt about the twelve step programme – a set of guidelines which can bring solution to practically any problem; I learnt how to mind myself and to stop trying to control my son’s behaviour. I was given information on where my son can go for treatment when he is ready. I went on a respite week to Kilkenny where I made new friends from all over the country, who are in similar situations. This would never have happened without me joining ANGELS Cavan Family Support. The Cavan group is fabulous, without the rest of the group, I would not be half the person I am today. I would urge parents of users to join Family Support, as support for yourself can help the whole family. “

Most families dealing with drug/alcohol use are looking for answers. The answers they look for initially relate to their child - where can she/he go for treatment? In most cases family members don't realise that they need help for themselves.

We have learned that addiction is an illness, not a moral issue. It is a two-fold disease: a physical allergy coupled with an obsession of the mind. It can be arrested, but never cured.

When we fully understand and accept that addiction is a disease, that it is both mental and physical, and that we are powerless over it; we become ready to learn a better way to live.

The Family Support Group is primarily for you who know or have known a feeling of desperation concerning the addiction problem of someone very near to you. We have travelled that unhappy road too, and found the answer with serenity and peace of mind.

Keep an open mind and attend as many meetings as possible. Feel free to ask questions and to enter into the dicussions. You will soon make new friends and will feel very much a part of the group.

I am a drug user. I need help.

Don't solve my problems for me. This only makes me lose respect for you.

Don't lecture, moralise, scold, blame, or argue, whether I'm loaded or sober. It may make you feel better, but it will make the situation worse.

Don't accept my promises. The nature of my illness prevents me keeping them, even though I mean them at the time. Promises are only my way of postponing pain. Don't keep switching agreements; if an agreement is made, stick to it.

Don't lose your temper with me. It will destroy you and any possibility of helping me.

Don't allow your anxiety for me make you do what I should do for myself.

Don't cover for me or try to spare me the consequences of my using. It may reduce the crisis, but it will make my illness worse.

Above all, don't run away from reality as I do. Drug dependence, my illness, gets worse as my using continues. Start now to learn, to understand, to plan for recovery. Find what groups exist to help families of drug abusers.

I need help - from a doctor, a psychologist, a counsellor, from a recovering addict who found recovery through Family Support, and from God.

The Water Boys, the Weather Girls, Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones are amongst the host of stars lining up to sing their favourite songs in the Pikers Lodge, Gowna on Sunday 3 August at 8pm at the ‘Stars in Your Eyes’ Show. The Saw Doctors and the Pointer Sisters are also making guest appearances alongside many others. 9.30pm. Tickets €15.

Having made their debut in Gowna on Sunday, most of the stars will be out live pig racing on Monday at 2pm in the GAA football field. Come and join the fun.

New Irish Language Groups in Co. Cavan

Glór Bhreifne is an Irish Language Group based in Cavan that was established in 2002.

Glor Bhreifne is affiliated to the National organisations, Glór na nGael and Comhaltas Uladh ( Ulster Connradh na Gaeilge).

We have organised and continue to organise a wide range of Irish Language events and activities for the community and for those in Cavan who are interested in the Irish Language:

Registration night

Registration night is taking place on Thursday 23rd Oct at 6.15pm - 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Registration forms have been sent home with the kids. Please contact your section Leader if you haven't received one. Bring the form along on the night fully completed. One form per child is required. It is very important that you make registration night otherwise your child will not be re-registered with Scouting Ireland and will no longer be insured to take part in weekly activities. The cost per year is €38.00 and this is payable to Scouting Ireland. Any parents with second hand uniforms may bring along on the night to sell to new kids in the Group. Must be in good condition!

PLEASE NOTE...NEW MEMBERS ARE VERY WELCOME....KIDS AND ADULTS!

There will be no meetings the week of the school holidays ie. Week commencing 27th Oct.

Scout Hike at Castle Lake

Hi Scouts,

Now that we've almost recovered from the Jamboree and Scouts are back in full swing its time to stretch those legs and get some fresh air back into those lungs again!!!

We are all meeting at the Cavan Road gate into Castle Lake at 6.15 next Thursday (16th) for a hike around the lake - pick up time 7.30 at the same place. It's gonna be cold.....so wrap up warm and wear a waterproof jacket, hat, boots or wellies and thick socks. Gloves are optional but highly recommended..... and definately bring a torch, it will be getting dark by pick up time!

See you all there full of enthusiasm!

Scouts are meeting tomorrow evening (Thursday 2nd October) at the picnic area at Lough an Lea at 6.15pm. Pick up same place at 7.30pm. We are going to do a short hike so please come appropriately dressed as it could be wet and will probably be getting dark by 7.30pm.

Irish Conversation Group: Glór Bhréifne's weekly Ciorcal Comhrá will recommence on Wednesday 1st October at 9.00pm in the Farnham Arms Hotel, Cavan.

This

Adults who are beginners or fluent or not so fluent are welcome to attend. The session takes place for about an hour and a half in the restaurant
area of the hotel.

The conversation is directed by a focused theme/languagegames.

A cup of tea/coffee is also available.

Participants who attend 50%
or more of the weekly Ciorcal Comhrá, during the year (2008-2009) will be
in a position to avail of a certain number of Gaeltacht scholarships to attend
Irish language summer courses.

Well the motto for the last year has been.......IT'S GOING TO BE GREAT!

And guess what...it was Great. We had such a good time at the Jamboree that the smell of patchouli oil and Dolly Parton has a whole new meaning for us. Graham brought his cd player along with lots of cds. Queen, James Blunt, Abba and many others. The kids weren't even interested in all that modern day stuff....."play Dolly Graham" is all we heard the whole week. So Dolly Parton became our Jamboree Queen. We sang along to 'Islands In The Stream' every night before lights out, while burning patchouli oil and lemongrass to keep the bugs away. I have to say it's the first time I've ever seen 4 adults singing into salt cellars and tomato ketchup bottles. Even when our dining shelter got demolished in the storm we pumped up the volume and sang along with Dolly. It was great!

The communal showers were an experience.....I'm saying no more there. Thank God for baby wipes.

Emma Gormley won 'Girl of the Camp' in the Cub section and Paul Curran won 'Man of the Camp' in the Scout section. All the kids were very well behaved during the camp and we had no problems. Towards the end of the week the weather was very wet and everyone just got on with having a good time. The positive energy on our site was amazing.

Of course we wear make-up when we're camping. We like roughing it but hey..some things a girl just can't do without.

Bailieborough Scouts would like to thank Airtricity and Co. Cavan VEC, who recently granted us some money to help us on our way to the Jamboree and to buy some equipment. The money along with some money raised before Christmas enabled us to provide the kids with free Transport to and from the Jamboree on 4 different days. We were also able to give each child a discount off their total cost. Also thank you to Cavan County Council who also gave us some grant money in the past. It is all very much appreciated.

Arrival times are very strict and our arrival time is 9.30am on Saturday 2nd of Aug so we will have a very early start that morning. We will need to depart from the Community Centre at 7.00am Saturday morning. The half week Cubs and Scouts will be departing Punchestown on Tuesday 5th Aug at 1.00pm and arrive in Bailieborough at approx 3.00pm The full week Scouts will be departing Punchestown on Sunday 10th Aug at 12noon and arrive in Bailieborough approx 2.00pm

All Cubs and Scouts attending the Jamboree are required to attend a kit inspection on Friday evening in the Community Centre at 7.30pm (You may come earlier if you wish. Leaders will be there from 6.30 onwards.) This will ensure the Kids are properly prepared for their trip. Their rucksacks can then be loaded on to the bus. This will save time and rushing Sat morning.

We had a really good time on our last camping trip. We went to an open field which belongs to Darragh Smith. Thank you Darragh and Family for allowing us to camp on your property. It is a beautiful place overlook

ing a lake. And we laid out our camp site just as we will at the Jamboree. On our last camping trip we had a prize for 'Man of the Camp' and it went to Jordan Smith. This time 'Man of the Camp' went to a double act...Tommy and Cian. They were like 2 peas in a pod. They were true little Scouts who went about their duties without a complaint, offered their help to Leaders and were both very well behaved. Well done lads! Keep up your enthusiasm for Scouting. And I have to say each and every child was excellent and we will be very proud of them all in Punchestown.

Pre Jamboree Camp

Cubs and Scouts,

Don't forget our last overnight camp before the Jamboree on is Wednesday 16^th July. It is advisable that all kids who are attending the Jamboree come along as it will be the last chance for preparation. Sleeping arrangements need to be decided, rostas, camp layout and rules and boundaries. The Jamboree will be hosting over 9,000 Scouts from all over the world and our camp space is limited and obviously with so many kids attending rules and restrictions will be very tight. BUT…..it will still be one of the best trips a Scout will ever have. GUARANTEED! So we really do need to be prepared for this one.

As we all know we can’t depend on the weather in Ireland so it is crucial that the Scouts are well kitted out for bad weather. With the proper waterproof gear there is no need to let rain prevent us from having a good time. So if the weather is bad this Wednesday we will still be going ahead with our camp out. If we can’t camp out for one wet night, there won’t be much hope for us at the Jamboree if it’s raining. (But hopefully it will be sunny and dry for August)

We are meeting at the Community Centre at 6.15pm to leave at 6.30 sharp and we will drive to our site. Please be on time as it’s very unfair for the people who are early to be left hanging around. Thank you.

We will be ready to leave the next day at around 12.30 - we will let parents know for sure by phone on the morning.

· Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hand towel

· Plastic bag to put possible wet clothes in.

· Please wear your neckers (available now to buy if you lost yours) New Cubs and Scouts will receive their first one free from their Leader.

I am suggesting the kids don’t bring sweets/fizzy drinks etc.

There will be supper and a set bed time. And we don’t want them full of E’s. I’m sure parents understand this request.

This list is designed by experienced campers and it’s to ensure that the kids are properly prepared and comfortable for their camp out. There’s nothing more miserable than a wet child with no spare socks or been the only one in the dark with no torch.

Please don’t omit anything – these are things all Scouts should be in possession of at this stage. Tea towel is always on the list and for some reason most kids don’t bring one – why????

We work as a team and this means washing and drying your own dishes!

Well done to the Scouts who took part in the car wash with Rehab last Saturday 5th July. They all enjoyed the fun.

The Rehab Group is a not-for-profit organisation working for social and economic inclusion among people with disabilities and others who are marginalised and they have teamed up with Top Oil for their second national car wash day.

SHEELIN GUILD CELEBRATE 40 YEARS

Sheelin Guild celebrated their 40th anniversary with a party in the Realtog Centre Kilnaleck on Friday evening 20th June. Joining in the celebrations were past members and members from neighbouring guilds. The formation of the guild was the brainchild of Mrs. Maureen Gill who had moved to the area from Finea. The oldest ICA member in Ireland Mrs. Annie Fitzsimons who celebrated her 103rd birthday recently is a member of the guild and was present to enjoy the celebrations. Annie is a remarkable lady who is still able to attend the meetings and interested in keeping up to date with what is happening in the area.

Gowna Go for Pride of Place in Cavan

Proud to show off it’s new lakeside walk along Swan Lake, it’s disability pier on the shores of loch Gowna, and its newly built older people’s housing, Gowna is going for Pride of Place for best village in Cavan. But it’s not just the new facilities and amenities that the lakesiders are proud of, it’s the spirit and way they use all the different skills that people have in the community.

“We use the different skills that each member brings to the community. The people in the Tidy Towns have a lovely eye for colour and planting. But the people in the Community Development Association are good at making funding applications…so they work together,” said Kate Ennals, the Development Association’s PRO.

“People in the Housing Association have been able to use their planning, and construction experience when we are building new houses, or walls, or whatever. The Anglers have been able to advise on the best way to develop tourism and fishing points. Other members keep us working together, making sure everyone knows what is going and keeping the communication going. Others are good at funding applications. Some people know everyone there is to know and who can do a good job. Others know who wont!

“Everyone in Gowna has different skills and we use those skills. That is the key to our success! And we like to work with the different agencies, too. We have also entered The Golden Mile competition,” continued Gerry Brady, chair of GCDA.

Working with Cavan County Council, Gowna recently installed CCTV cameras on the Bog Road and at Dernaferst to deter people from dumping and littering.

Put forward by Cavan County Council, the lakesiders will be showing the judges on the 15^th July what community spirit and pride of place is all about and how it has worked in Gowna to make it such a strong community. The Footballers, the Tidy Towns, the Hall Committee, the Community Development Association, the Housing Association, the Senior Citizens and the School will all be there, to name a few.

Two Gold Medals for Cavan pupils in Primary School Judo Championships

The continued development of Judo in the county and the growing pool of young talent was very evident at the Primary School Championships in Dublin last weekend when locals Laurynas Jousapaicils and Hanlon Crowley both returned with gold along with four other medallists from within the county.

The Primary Schools Championships is an open tournament that included participants from over twenty different National schools from the Dublin, Meath and Cavan areas. The county of Cavan had representation from five different National Schools at these championships and the medal haul is a great testament to hard work and commitment of Cavan Judo coach Adrian Boyle.

Laurynas Jousapaicils representing St Felims NS, Laurynas turned back the challenges of Jimmy Kelly (Cushenstown NS), Lee Gibbon and Cavan’s Cian Goodrich (Farnham NS) on route to winning gold in the competitive Under 13’s 45kgs+ category.

Hanlon Crowley (St Felims NS, Ballinagh) required five wins and battled past the challenges of Jason Walker (St Josephs BNS, Dublin), Ryan Campbell (St Josephs BNS, Dublin), Isabel Shier (Garristown NS), Thomas Flood (Oldcastle NS) and Cavan’s Dylan Reilly (Mount Nugent NS) to win gold in the Under 10’s 32kgs category.

Hanlon’s good performances were further commended when he was later adjudged and given the ‘player of the day’ award.

Cavan’s other medallists included silver for Warren Reilly (Killgarry NS) in the Under 9’s 30Kgs category and bronze for both Mantas Surgutis (St Felims NS, Cavan) Under 11’s 45kgs category and Cian Goodrich (Farnham NS) Under 13 45kgs + category. Cavan ju’do-ist Thomas Flood (Oldcastle NS) was the county’s other medallist with bronze in the Under 10’d 32kgs category.

Warren Reilly was unfortunate to slip to the silver medal position, despite impressive quick wins over James Taggart (St Josephs BNS) and Shane Kavanagh (St Patrick’s, Drumcondra) his earlier defeat by a single koka score to Maxin Trigub (St Brigids, Castleknock) proved costly.

Cavan’s remaining competitor Dylan Reilly (Mount Nugent NS), narrow missed out on a medal position after bailing out of the competition at the quarterfinals stage.

The medal haul is a further indication of how well the sport is progressing and how the county is fast emerging as the leading force within the country.

Next weekend Cavan’s talented ju’do-ist are all being assessed and graded, several of the newer members will be looking to achieve their white & yellow belt before seeking more regional and national honours next season.

Glór Breifne, the Cavan based Irish language group, has received national recognition at the annual Glór na nGael awards for its youth work.

The awards were presented the 2007 awards in Ionad Glór, Ennis County Clare on Saturday, 29 March, by Cathal Goan, the Director General of RTÉ.
